KOKONUT vs Coconut Cult, Van Leeuwen and Alec's
These four brands get shelved near each other and compared constantly, and three of them are not actually the same product. Here is the plain version, using what each brand says about itself.
The short answer
- KOKONUT is coconut pudding. Refrigerated, sweet, set with agar agar. Plant based.
- The Coconut Cult is probiotic coconut yogurt. Refrigerated, fermented, tangy. Plant based.
- Van Leeuwen is ice cream, with a vegan line. Frozen.
- Alec’s Ice Cream is ice cream made with A2 dairy. Frozen, and it contains dairy.
If you are dairy free, Alec’s is out. If you want something sweet rather than sour, Coconut Cult is a different craving. If you do not want to manage freezer space, that rules out both ice creams.
KOKONUT vs The Coconut Cult
The closest comparison, because both are coconut based and both live in the fridge in a jar.
The Coconut Cult describes its product as organic coconut yogurt in glass jars with billions of live probiotics, tangy and mousse like. It is a fermented food, and people mostly eat it by the spoonful for the probiotics.
KOKONUT is not fermented. It is a dessert. Sweet rather than sour, set with agar agar so the texture is bouncy and clean, and built around flavors like black sesame, matcha, taro and Vietnamese coffee rather than yogurt cultures. We do not make probiotic claims, because we are not a probiotic product.
Practically: if you want the tang and the cultures, buy theirs. If you want dessert, buy ours. A lot of people keep both.
KOKONUT vs Van Leeuwen
Van Leeuwen makes very good ice cream and has a real vegan line. The difference is format, not quality.
Ice cream needs a freezer, melts on the way home, and comes in a pint that you keep making decisions about. Coconut pudding sits in the fridge, holds in a cooler for an afternoon, and comes in a sealed 11 oz jar so the portion is settled before you open it.
KOKONUT vs Alec’s Ice Cream
Alec’s makes ice cream with A2 dairy and thoughtfully sourced ingredients, and some products carry live probiotics. It is a dairy product. If you are vegan, lactose intolerant or avoiding dairy for any reason, this is not a comparison you need to make. If you are not, the choice is simply frozen dairy versus refrigerated coconut.
What is in a KOKONUT jar
Coconut water, coconut milk, filtered water, organic coconut sugar, agar agar, sea salt, and the flavor. Plant based, dairy free, gluten free and soy free. Set with agar agar from seaweed, never gelatin. 11 oz, sealed, refrigerated.
Nine flavors: plain coconut, black sesame, matcha, Vietnamese coffee, taro, mango, peach, strawberry, and a limited edition peach gum jelly.
